Autistic spectrum disorders are characterised by a Triad of Impairments:

These can occur in varying degrees of severity and are generally accompanied by a limited, narrow repetitive pattern of activities.

A total of six (or more) items from:

Qualitative impairment in social interaction

as manifested by at least  two of the following;

Qualitative impairments in communications

as manifested by at least one of the following;

Restricted, repetitive and stereotyped patterns of behaviour, interests and activities

 as manifested by at least one of the following;

Delays or abnormal functioning in at least one of the following areas

 with onset prior to 3 years old.

The disturbance is not better accounted for by Rett's Disorder or Childhood Disintegrative Disorder.
