    1. The pictures are great. However, I don't like the organization of the recipes; the book was full of all the current buzzwords which tell you nothing; and finally the 4 recipes I tried were fails. The second star came only from the photography.


    2. Such a great book, with a good amount of history thrown in. The recipes are modified enough to accommodate what can easily be found on one's grocery store. Very few specialty items needed. Beautiful pictures.

Chef Walter Staib grew up in Germany, learned his cooking techniques there, and then became the honcho at Philadelphia's City Tavern (where you can eat recipes or drink beer crafted by Thomas Jefferson and George Washington!).     5. I have actually been in the Black Forest when I was 16, right outside of Stuttgart, and thought it was lovely. I loved this cookbook of Black Forest food, which included French, Austrian and Hungarian influences. The pictures were beautiful and everything looked so fantastic, even the stuff I wouldn't normally eat like tripe and sweetbreads. I liked that the author included his personal history and photographs of growing up there, as well as general history about the area to explain all the infl [...]



    6. A rare cookbook: The expectation created in the photos can be met by someone who doesn’t have more than a couple hours of prep and cook time. And the food rocks.
